Why do you want to serve on I would like to serve on this commission because I have a high value this Commission? for the diversity of our community and want to help promote community engagement among all the residents of Roseville. I share the Commissions desire to safeguard the dignity and rights of each individual regardless of their religion, ethnicity, gender, citizen status, economic or any other points of division by which people have been marginalized in our community. The Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission is a practical way tohelp support and promote these values in my communitiy. What is your view of the role The Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission has an of this Commission? important role to ensure that the plans and policies being considered by the city helpto promote the wellbeing, safety and interests of all her residents. The focus of the Commission should give particular emphasis on engaging and celebrating groups and communities within Roseville that might otherwise be overlooked and marginalized by the dominant culture. What specific skills or Beginning as an aid worker in a Hmong refugee camp in Thailand I experiences do you have that have gained a lot of intercultural experience living and serving with would be beneficial in Southeast Asian people groups including the Hmong, Lao, Filipino, serving on the advisory Cambodian and Thai people. My primary are applying? work in Bangkok Thailand for 25 years involved serving in low-income communities and slums doing community development work. This included directing a micro-economic development program, English classes, Youth development programs, and practicing community organizing. As a community organizer I developed skills and principles for engaging and empowering urban poor communities to address community concerns through a participatory process and Asset-Based Community Development. Most recently, my Doctoral Thesis project involved using an Appreciative Inquiry practices to promote community engagement in a multiethnic context. Currently I serve as the leader of a faith community and have participated in a network of Roseville area churches that have met multiple times over the past year to address issues of racial reconciliation and the needs of immigrant communities.
