In a healthy herd, which most metro deer populations can be
considered, you would expect most adult females to be carrying two fawns at this time of year. With 7 of the 8 Adult females carrying two fetuses, this may indicate previous
removals have improved the overall health of the herd. Most deer continued to show minimal body fat during cleaning/processing as was also observed during the 2016-17
removal, which may indicate a still less than healthy herd. In the future, it may be beneficial to target adult males along with females in order to remove older, less healthy deer

from the population.
Safeguarding American Agriculture
APHIS is an agency of USDA’s Marketing and Regulatory Programs
An Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer
35
