General Research - The Name of Pocahontas –the Person <br />Pocahontas Parkin Rosevillewas named in the 1960s in reference to Pocahontas, a popular <br />historical Native American figure. Pocahontas was a member of the Powhatan tribe in present- <br />day Virginia, who became involved with the English settlers at Jamestown between 1607 and <br />1617. Pocahontas has been a popular figure in popular culture throughout the past two <br />centuries including books, plays, art, musicals and motion pictures about Pocahontas. <br />Many of these popular culture versions of the story of Pocahontas tell the English version of <br />events based largely upon written documents from early English settlers. This version differs <br />from that told by the Pocahontas’ Powhatan tribe through their oral historyand more recently, <br />a recently written biography. <br />These different telling of events has caused some questions as to whether the name <br />Pocahontas is appropriate in Roseville. <br />At this meeting, staff will present a summary of the differences between the English and <br />Powhatan versions of the story of Pocahontas. <br />42 <br /> <br />
