41 The three seasons of deer management included the following years:
42 2016/2017 – 20 removed
43 o 1 night
44 2018/2019 – 20 removed
45 o 3 nights
46 2019/2020 – 46 removed
47 o 8 nights – 32 in the first two nights
48 o 23 from SE Roseville
49 o 23 from NE Roseville
50
51 Staff noted highlights from the USDA Summary Report for the 2019/2020 reduction which
52 included:
53 21 males
54 o 7 juveniles
55 25 females
56 o 7 had a fetus (6 were carrying 2)
57 7 out of 46 showed injuries
58 o Broken legs, car accident injuries, etc.
59
60 According to the Ramsey County survey that was completed on January 29, 2020 there are 59 deer
61 in Roseville. Based on the location of the deer spotted during the survey, staff has been working
62 with the USDA on the potential use of private property in the NE corner of Roseville for future
63 reductions. The use of private property is necessary because previous attempts to reduce deer from
64 Ladyslipper Park were unsuccessful and there is no other appropriate city owned land in the NE
65 corner of the city.
66
67 Staff reviewed community input information on the deer that is tracked and analyzed as well as the
68 data from the Roseville Police on the crashes (2) and carcass removals(2) in 2019.
69
70 Based on the current deer population in Roseville the USDA and the DNR recommend reducing the
71 herd by 85 deer for the 2020/2021 season. Below is the calculation method that the USDA and the
72 DNR used to arrive at their recommendation:
73 Survey – January 29, 2020 59 minimum
74 Taken since survey (last reduction – 2/27/20) - 8 taken
75 Remaining herd 51
76 Assume ½ were female (25.5)
77 Assume 2 fawns each (add 51) + 51
78 Population 102
79 Habitat support - 17
80 Reduce 85
2
5
