Attachment E
September 22, 2020
Public Works, Environment and Transportation Commission
Sustainability Update
Partners in Energy
Staff met with Xcel Energy and the Center for Energy and the Environment (CEE) for the Partners
in Energy Kickoff Meeting on September 2, 2020, and a follow up on September 4. The meeting
objectives were to introduce the core team, get a program overview, learn about the city's sustainability
priorities, and discuss the next steps for recruiting an Energy Action Team.
City staff are currently looking into the potential makeup of the Energy Action Team, and how to recruit
members. The Energy Action Team should have an equitable group of individuals to ensure the Energy
Action Plan is for all communities in Roseville.
Adopt -A -Drain
The City has also been working on expanding its Adopt -A -Drain program, which is part of a wider
statewide initiative started by Hamline University and the City of St. Paul. This program encourages
residents to commit to adopting a stormdrain in their neighborhood, and keep the drain clear by
sweeping up debris, salt, trash, and yard waste. The water that flows in the drains goes directly into
water bodies within the City, and it is important to keep these drains clear so they do not carry these
harmful pollutants into these waters. The City now has a webpage about the program
(http://cityofroseville.com/3499/Adopt-A-Drain-Program), and has ordered signs that will be mailed to
interested residents in the City that have adopted a drain.
Biz Recycling
Roseville plans on doing a mailing to all businesses within the City to encourage participation in
Ramsey & Washington Counties' Biz Recycling program. This program is aimed at businesses and multi-
unit housing developments to help with their recycling and compost procedures, giving them insights
and potential grant money to improve their recycling efforts. Roseville will be promoting this program
through a direct mailing.
City Compost Collection Feasibility
Since June, an initial feasibility report has been made determining how City and park buildings
could set up compost collection, mainly to capture food scraps and paper products from going to the
landfill. Additionally, documents related to running sustainable meetings and events have been created.
A draft report of how the City can divert additional materials from the waste stream created at
Municipal Buildings is attached.
Green Corp Member
The City successfully applied for a Green Corp Member through the Minnesota Pollution Control
Agency. The Green Corp Member will work on reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout the city
