To: Parks and Recreation Commission
From: Lonnie Brokke/Matthew Johnson
Date: October 28, 2020
Re: Notes for Meeting on Thursday, November 5, 2020

1.Introductions

2. Public Comment Invited

3. Approval of Minutes of the October 6, 2020 Meeting
Enclosed is a copy of the minutes of October 6, 2020. Please be prepared to approve or
amend.
Requested Commission Action: Approve/amend meeting minutes of October 6, 2020.

4. Pocahontas Park Name Discussion
Thank you for your work and interest in this topic. This is and will be an ongoing agenda
item. The following is a general timeline on where we have been and where we are heading
at this point:
August2020–Youth Commissioner Andrew Kim mentioned that he had a
community comment suggesting that the Pocahontas Park name might be of some
concern by the community and was wondering if the commission would address it. It
was felt that this would be a good topic at a joint meeting with the City Council to
share thoughts and seek guidance.
September 2020 - because of the community and commission comments, staff
presented a general history on Pocahontas, the person. The commission was
interested in pursuing this topic further and suggested that staff identify a potential
process for further examination.
October 2020 – in order to provide a framework, staff shared the Government
Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE) process and the recent key areas of the draft
Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission’s (HRIEC) community
engagement recommendations. The commission supported this process and agreed
that each commission member would complete a related questionnaire by October
13, 2020 to be included in the discussion at the November meeting.
November 5, 2020 – Discuss and provide input into the Community Engagement
and Analysis Draft Plan (included in your packet) and assign tasks.
December 1, 2020 – TBD
Joint meeting with the City Council –it has been determined that due to the City
Councils busy agendas and limited remaining meetings thisyear, the joint meeting
will be after the first of the year. Timing will still fitand it should not hold up your
work. Sharing work done and seeking further guidance at that point should work out
well.
Requested Commission Action: Discuss and provide input into the Community
Engagement and Analysis Draft Plan document.
