SCHOOLS, ELEMENTARY OR SECONDARY: Public or private schools which provide an educational 739
<br />program for one or more grades between kindergarten and grade 12 and which are commonly known as 740
<br />elementary schools, grade schools, middle schools, junior high schools, or high schools. 741
<br />SCREENING: A hedge, wall, or fence to provide a visual separator and physical barrier not less than 4 742
<br />feet nor more than 6 feet in height, unless otherwise provided for in this ordinance. 743
<br />SEASONAL SALES, OUTDOOR: Outdoor seasonal retail sales, where permitted, including but not 744
<br />limited to the seasonal sale of Christmas trees, plants, flowers, vegetables and related products available 745
<br />on a seasonal basis. 746
<br />SECONDHAND STORE: See CONSIGNMENT STORE. 747
<br />SELF-STORAGE FACILITY: See MINI-STORAGE FACILITY. 748
<br />SENIOR HOUSING: A residential complex containing multifamily dwellings designed for and 749
<br />principally occupied by senior citizens. Such facilities may include a congregate meals program in a 750
<br />common dining area, but exclude institutional care such as medical or nursing care and are distinguished 751
<br />from assisted living or nursing homes. 752
<br />SERVICES, PERSONAL: See RETAIL, GENERAL. 753
<br />SETBACK: The minimum distance by which any building or structure must be separated from a street 754
<br />right-of-way, lot line, or ordinary high water level. Also known as “required yard.” 755
<br />SETBACK, FRONT: The minimum distance by which any building or structure must be separated from 756
<br />the front lot line. 757
<br />SETBACK, REAR: The minimum distance by which any building or structure must be separated from the 758
<br />rear lot line. In the case of an irregular, triangular or gore-shaped lot, a line 10 feet in length entirely 759
<br />within the lot, parallel to and most distant from the front lot line shall be considered to be the rear lot line 760
<br />for the purpose of determining the rear yard setback. 761
<br />SETBACK, SIDE: The minimum distance by which any building or structure must be separated from the 762
<br />side lot line. 763
<br />SHRUB: A low, usually several stemmed, woody plant. 764
<br />SIDEWALK: The portion of the street between the curb line and the adjacent property line intended for 765
<br />the use of pedestrians. 766
<br />SIGN: A name, identification, description, display, illustration, or device which is affixed, painted, or 767
<br />represented directly or indirectly upon the outside of a building, structure, or piece of land and which 768
<br />directs attention to an object, product, place, activity, person, institution, organization, or business. A sign 769
<br />shall be considered as a structure or a part of a structure for the purpose of applying yard and height 770
<br />regulations. Official court or public notices, or any flag, emblem, or insignia of a nation, political unit, 771
<br />school, or religious group, shall not be considered a sign under this ordinance. See Section 1010.02 for 772
<br />additional sign definitions. 773
<br />SITE: A lot or group of adjacent lots intended, designated, or approved to function as an integrated unit, 774
<br />that is proposed for development in accord with the provisions of this Code and is in a single ownership 775
<br />or has multiple owners, all of whom execute a joint application for development. 776
