Guidelines
General guidelines to be satisfied when considering installation of marked crosswalks,
includes the following:
1. The installation of marked crosswalks should be based on engineering study and
shall meet all design standards and requirements particularly ADA design
requirements.
2. marked crosswalks should connect to established sidewalks/trails at both ends
but exceptions can be made where established on -street pathways are present.
3. Adequate street lighting should be provided for the safety of pedestrians.
4. Street parking must be restricted adjacent to marked crosswalks to allow for
adequate sight lines for both the motorists and the pedestrians. The length of the
parking restriction shall be based on an engineering study (judgment).
5. The provisions of the Minnesota Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MN
MUTCD) shall be followed.
INSTALLATION CRITERIA:
Marked crosswalks should generally not be considered for roadways with less
than 1,000 vehicles per day unless as part of a school walking route or regional/park
trail crossing.
Facility Type
Consideration can be given to marking a crosswalk if the proposed location is part of a
school walking route, adjacent to an elderly facility, or connects to a park and/or a park
or regional trail facility.
3. Traffic Gaps
Consideration can be given to marking a crosswalk if there is less than one adequate
crossing gap in traffic per minute during the peak hour. A crossing gap is measured as
