Guidelines <br />General guidelines to be satisfied when considering installation of marked crosswalks, <br />includes the following: <br />1. The installation of marked crosswalks should be based on engineering study and <br />shall meet all design standards and requirements particularly ADA design <br />requirements. <br />2. marked crosswalks should connect to established sidewalks/trails at both ends <br />but exceptions can be made where established on -street pathways are present. <br />3. Adequate street lighting should be provided for the safety of pedestrians. <br />4. Street parking must be restricted adjacent to marked crosswalks to allow for <br />adequate sight lines for both the motorists and the pedestrians. The length of the <br />parking restriction shall be based on an engineering study (judgment). <br />5. The provisions of the Minnesota Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MN <br />MUTCD) shall be followed. <br />INSTALLATION CRITERIA: <br />Marked crosswalks should generally not be considered for roadways with less <br />than 1,000 vehicles per day unless as part of a school walking route or regional/park <br />trail crossing. <br />Facility Type <br />Consideration can be given to marking a crosswalk if the proposed location is part of a <br />school walking route, adjacent to an elderly facility, or connects to a park and/or a park <br />or regional trail facility. <br />3. Traffic Gaps <br />Consideration can be given to marking a crosswalk if there is less than one adequate <br />crossing gap in traffic per minute during the peak hour.
