REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br />Date:September 21, 2020 <br />Item No.: .d <br />Department Approval City Manager Approval <br />Item Description: Consider Co-hosting Discussion Series on Race with Community Partners <br />1 B ACKGROUND <br />2 The Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission (HRIEC)has beenasked to co-host a <br />3 virtual discussion series on race and racism with community partners in 2020-2021 by the City of <br />4 Shoreview. After discussion at their September meeting, the commission is recommending that the <br />5 Council consider this partnership as a way to engage and educate residents. <br />6 <br />7 The discussion series would focus on race and how it impacts different areas of our communities. <br />8 The series is designed to serve as an educational tool as well as an opportunity for community <br />9 discussion on topics as it relates to race. The Shoreview Human Rights Commission and staff have <br />10 put together the following series/sessions (below). It is anticipated that one to two sessions would <br />11 occur yet in 2020 with the remainder of the sessions being held monthly in 2021. <br />12 <br />13 To give you an idea the outline of the first session, the proposal from the Theater of Public Policy is <br />14 attached. <br />15 <br />16 Topics for Discussion Series: <br />17 Let’s get uncomfortable: A space to talk about race and being anti-racist by the Theater of <br />18 Public Policy ($1,000 for 25 people and $1,450 for 40 people) <br />19 Race and Policing: by Duchess Harris, American Studies professor at Macalester University <br />20($500 per hour) <br />21 Race and Employment: (potential speaker from Ramsey County) <br />22 Race and Voting: by the League of Women Voters <br />23 Racism in Real Estate: by RETHOS ($1,750) <br />24 <br />25 Community partners identified include the Shoreview Human Rights Commission, and Ramsey <br />26 County Library- Shoreview. <br />27 <br />28 The general outline of the series include having a speaker present information, with an opportunity <br />29 for a question and answer period with the speaker at the end of the event. As mentioned, the event <br />30 would be hosted virtually. <br />31 <br />32 P OLICY O BJECTIVE <br />33 As part of the scope of duties and functions of the Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement <br />34 Commission, under the topic of ENGAGE, the commission may engage residents through city <br />35 council – approved programs, events and projects that support the commission’s purpose. <br />36 <br />Page 1 of 2 <br /> <br />
