I believe in the importance of local government and would like to find a way to participate in important conversations and discussions that effect my community. As a resident of Roseville for the past 5 years, I would like to help be a voice of the people, trying to represent multiple opinions, backgrounds and experiences. An opportunity to represent the voice of multiple people would also provide a chance for me to become more intimately engaged with my fellow Roseville residents. What is your view of the role of this Commission? To be sure that the views, opinions and experiences of all people in the community of Roseville are being represented and expressed in governmental decisions. To also find ways to use our public spaces for neighborhood education and community building. To bring more opportunity, depth and honor to the city of Roseville by acknowledging and engaging with our diversity of backgrounds, history and experiences. To be sure that everyone is treated fairly and that issues of equity find a space to be heard and addressed. What specific skills or experiences do you have that would be beneficial in serving on the advisory commission for which you are applying? As a Women and Gender studies major from Macalester College (class of 1999) and a Peace Corps volunteer (Russia 1999 - 2001), I first and foremost bring with me the skills of intense listening and curiosity. I am able to connect with people on a deeper level because I give them time, space and opportunity to share. I understand what it feels like to be vulnerable or to inhabit a space as a minority. I know the true value of a community (city) is to be found in the relationships between the people and the trust in the social/civil contract. I am also a film director and a producer, so I bring with me the skill of storytelling and a method by which to introduce myself to people and learn more about them. I also have some training in facilitation & leading consensus workshops. If you identified a second choice commission, please include skills or experiences that would be beneficial for serving on that commission. Again, I think the skills I would bring with me to the Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement commission are the same - I think it's important to be able to study current maps, laws and infrastructure and be able to listen to needs and ask the appropriate questions.
