REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION Date:November 9, 2020 Item No.:7.f Department Approval City Manager Approval Item Description: Receive Presentation on Fire Department Shift Staffing 1 B ACKGROUND 2 The Fire Department and City of Roseville recently accepted a Federal Emergency Management 3 Agency (FEMA) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant for just over 4$1.8 million dollars to be utilized to hire and retain six additional firefightersfor the next three years. 5 The Fire Department has been working through a Phase II staffing program focused on enhancing 6 and increasing on-duty staffing to better meet the increasing call volume and needs of the 7 community. This SAFER grant significantly assists with completing this phase now and into the 8 future. 9 With the additional six firefighters the Fire Department will begin to deploy shifts of up to eight 10 firefighters, staffing three pieces of apparatus 24/7/365; a significant step forward to meet the needs 11 of the community. 12 This presentation will demonstrate and discuss the evolution of theFire Department’s staffing 13 program, what the Council and community should expect with the Department’s staffing transition, 14 and review how the Fire Department experimented with staffing and service levels in 2020 with an 15 8-firefighter shift. 16 P OLICY O BJECTIVE 17 No policy objectives at this time; Fire Department seeks continued support for staffing transition. 18 B UDGET I MPLICATIONS 19 No new budget implications related to the presentation. 20 S TAFF R ECOMMENDATION 21 Staff recommends Council support the continued Fire Department staffing increasesand 22 enhancements. 23 R EQUESTED C OUNCIL A CTION 24 No official Council action needed; presentation only.
