Roseville Public Works, Environment and <br />Transportation Commission <br />Agenda Item <br />Date: March 22, 2022 Item No: 8 <br />Item Description: Business Sustainability Recognition Program <br />Background <br />Many cities are developing recognition programs to incentivize businesses to use more <br />sustainable procedures in their operations, and to help cities reach their sustainability and carbon <br />reduction goals. Commercial and industrial sectors tend to account for the majority of <br />greenhouse gas emissions, and present a significant opportunity to reduce energy usage. <br />Recognition programs often either reward projects completed in the community on an annual <br />basis, or provide checklists of sustainable practices businesses maintain on an ongoing basis, <br />sometimes with multiple levels of achievements. Some more robust programs include industry - <br />specific business practice checklists, including the City of Stillwater's Green Business Directory. <br />Sustainable practice checklists can contain the following categories: <br />• Solid Waste & Recycling <br />• Energy <br />• Water Conservation <br />• Transportation <br />• Landscaping & Stormwater <br />• Operational practices <br />Benefits to businesses participating in green recognition programs often include: <br />• Business link on city website and other city advertising materials <br />• Window clings, certificates, plaques, and/or stickers <br />• Recognition from city officials <br />• Financial assistance/rebates for improvements from the city/county/state <br />• Business cost savings from energy savings <br />Recommendations <br />We recommend a checklist -based approach to recognize sustainable businesses and <br />organizations in Roseville. The program should include multiple tiers to encourage continual <br />improvement, and higher tiers may include additional recognition and benefits, such as plaques, <br />framed certificates, and special recognition during City Council and Business Council meetings. <br />Certain actions could be weighted more heavily; for example, participation in our voluntary <br />
