Clothing production
is very resource —intensive, and only 15% of clothing is
recycled or donated, the rest winds up in landfills. Here
are some tips to approach clothing more sustainably:
1. Buy less, and keep your clothes longer. Keep a
notebook or mark on the tag whenever you wear a
piece of clothing to track what you wear most, and
invest in pieces that outlast seasonal trends.
2. Learn how to make simple repairs! Our local I
community center, Anpetu Teca, offers beginning
sewing lessons in their adult education program. A popped button or ripped seam
can be repaired, giving that piece of clothing many more wears)
3. Purchase clothing made from natural fabrics. Polyester is cheap, but also re-
leases microplastics into our water with each wash.
4. Take good care of your clothes —while convenient, dryers are hard on clothing
and cause premature wear. Dry your favorite pieces on a drying rack or clothes
line to extend their life.
PWET Commission meeting —Zero Waste Discussion
When: Tuesday, August 23rd, 6:30pm
Where: Roseville City Hall, 2660 Civic Center Drive, or
Virtual
Our Public Works, Environment, and Transportation (PWET)
Commission will be discussing ways to reduce waste from
takeout containers and plastic bags at their upcoming August
meeting.
