Rice Street Gardens Update and Executive Summary
Roseville —thank you, thank you, thank you!
Rice Street Gardens (RSG) has enabled 260 mostly immigrant families to garden on a site
near Rice & Roselawn since 2016. We wish to acknowledge the city of Roseville's help
and encouragement at its beginning and along the way with truckloads of compost and
other types of support. RSG is an important community resource, not only providing
food and exercise to all the gardeners, but helping many immigrant families graciously
adjust to life in America.
What's New?
The entire 13 acre site is owned by the St. Paul Regional Water Services (SPRWS), and
they have allowed RSG to use about 2.5 acres for free for the community garden. They
had planned to use the land for expansion one day, but have changed their minds and
are now trying to sell the entire site. So what should RSG do?
Our 2023 Capital Campaign
We are working with several interested parties: Habitat for Humanity, the city of
Maplewood, the Rice/Larpenteur Alliance, and the Rondo Community Land Trust. To
have some clout with these organizations and to insure continuation of a smaller garden
into the future we are planning a major fund raising campaign, hoping to raise at least $1
million. We already have a pledge for $300,000. It may be possible to buy the garden
land directly from SPRWS or we may act as part of a development team.
How Can Roseville Help
Help us publicize our campaign and let us know if you know others who might want to
support our effort.
