3. Report on the Rice Street Gardens in 2022
The current season began like many before:
• Returning gardeners were able to register online in February.
• New gardeners signed up in March and a waiting list was compiled
• In early April, plots were allotted, name tags for plots were printed, fees were collected using the
drive -through and other methods, and new information sent out.
• Gardeners began tilling their plots and putting up fences and other constructions around May 1.
• We recommended that planting begin around May 15, although some jumped the gun.
• Water was turned on, a porta potty installed, and a trash barrel set up by mid -May.
• During May we also get work teams to rotate the compost materials, pick up trash, and do repairs.
• In June there are all the loose -end problems —a few gardeners who haven't signed up return
thinking their plots were forever, some gardeners go on vacation and others try to expand into
those areas, and some disputes have to be resolved. Our administrator Dana Ferguson plays a key
role during this period, and we plan to have her continue in 2023.
Our gardener statistics this year are shown in the charts below. There seems to have been a slight resurgence of
Karen/Karenni speakers, now almost equal to the Nepali. Over half of the gardeners this year live in St. Paul.
