Poppy Days <br />May 19, 20, and 21, 2023 <br />Whereas: After the First World War, inspired by the opening lines of John McRae’s <br />wartime poem “In Flanders Fields,” and championed by international humanitarian workers <br />Moina Michael of the United States and Madame Guérin of France, the poppy was adopted in <br />many countries to commemorate the sacrifices of those who have been killed in war; and <br />Whereas: The United States Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1922 officially designated the <br />poppy as a symbol of remembrance and conducted their first Poppy Day drive that year, and in <br />1924 the VFW registeredthe “Buddy Poppy” as its official commemorative poppy; and <br />Whereas: VFW Buddy Poppies are assembled by disabled and needy Veterans and the <br />proceeds of the use of Buddy Poppies as a fundraising campaign are used exclusively for the <br />benefit of disabled and needy Veterans and the widows and orphans of deceased Veterans; and <br />Whereas: The basic purpose of the annual distribution of Buddy Poppies by the Veterans of <br />Foreign Wars is eloquently reflected in the desire to “Honor the Dead by Helping the Living;” <br />and <br />Whereas: Each year, members of Roseville Anderson Nelson VFW Post 7555 distribute <br />poppies at local sites the weekend before Memorial Day to raise awareness about the service of <br />veterans and the importance of Memorial Day; <br />Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the City Council of the City of Roseville hereby declares <br />May 19, 20, and 21, 2023, to be Poppy Days in Roseville for the distribution of these symbols of <br />appreciation for the sacrifices of our honored dead, and further urges the citizens of this <br />community to recognize the merits of this cause by contributing generously to its support <br />through donations for Buddy Poppies on those days. <br />Be It Further Resolved, that the City Council urges all patriotic citizens to wear a Buddy Poppy <br />as mute evidence of our gratitude to the men and women of this country who have risked their <br />lives in defense of the freedoms which we continue to enjoy as American citizens. <br />In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Roseville <br />th <br />to be affixed this 24 day of April 2023. <br />Mayor Daniel J.
