MU LT IPLE FA MILY <br />Multiple family housing, for purposes of thi� report, is define�� as <br />�uildings with three or more housing units. Estimates based on the <br />1960 Census of Housing indicate that 18, 9 per cent of all housing units <br />in t�e Metropolitan Area meet this criterion. In recent years, the <br />percentage of units built that are multiple units has risen sharply and <br />now exceeds I$0 9 per cent. If the present level of activity for apart- <br />ment construction continues, a greater proportion of our housing needs <br />will be met by multiplE units . <br />The per cent of multiple housing �nits in selected communities for which <br />data is available in the 1960 Census of Housing is highly variable. <br />Minneapolis has 32. 7 per cent and 5aint Paul 26. 0 per cent of its total <br />housing units in multiple unitse Falcon Heights with 13 per cent has the <br />highest percentage found in a suburban community; Hastings and Anoka, <br />which are older satellite towns, have between 13 and 14 per cent. Most <br />suburban apartments �.re found in the close-in suburbs. Minneapolis <br />and Saint Paul together account for almost 92 per cent of all multiple <br />units in the Area.
