CASE NUMBER:
APPLICANT:
1515-84
Willmus Companies
Page 2
Whenever ramps are substituted for an elevator to provide handicap access
to a second level, there are frequently problems and expenses involved in
building the ramp, as is evident here. The original design (which we will
have available at the meeting) oriented the stairs north -south, and
oriented the pedestrian toward the driveway on the south side of the
building where it would be safe to drop someone off who wishes to use the
ramp or stairway to the second level. The orientation as proposed, we
feel accents the nearness of the building to the street, and orients the
pedestrians to Hamline Avenue, where we do not want cars stopping or
parking.
6. Approval of the variance appears to be not the problem inasmuch as there
is an obvious hardship involved here since the mistake was discovered well
after the building was underway. We merely suggest, that it the variance
is approved, the sidewalk be moved to its appropriate location, and that
the stairs be designed to orient to the driveway to the south, rather than
directly to Hamline Avenue.
