Roots shall be spread in their normal position. All broken or frayed <br />roots shall be cut off cleanly. <br />L. Planting soil or prepared soil shall be placed and compacted carefully to <br />avoid injury to roots and to fill all voids. When the hole is nearly <br />filled, add water by inserting a garden hose with the nozzle removed, down <br />through the backfill to the bottom of the pit, allowing the water to run <br />with medium force and allow it to soak away. Fill hole to finish grade <br />and form a shallow saucer around each plant by placing a ridge of topsoil <br />around the edge of each pit. After ground settles, additional soil shall <br />be filled in to level of finished grade. <br />M. Trees shall be supported immediately after planting. Trees shall be <br />staked and wrapped. Wires shall be encased in hose to prevent direct <br />contact with bark of tree and shall be placed arund trunk in a single <br />loop. Wires shall be tightened and kept taut by twisting strands <br />together. <br />N. Stakes shall be equally spaced about each tree. Ends treated with wood <br />preservative shall be driven vertically into the ground to a depth of 2- <br />1/2' to 31, not injuring ball or roots. Trees shall be fastened to each <br />stake at a height of about 5' with 2 strands of wire. Stakes shall be <br />uniform in height and placed according to diameter of tree trunk. <br />0. Trees 1" to 3" in diameter shall be staked with 2 standard tee or "Y" <br />section metal farm fence posts. Stakes shall be equally spaced about each <br />tree placed in direction of prevailing summer and winter winds. Trees <br />shall be fastened to each stake at a height of about 5' with 2 single <br />strands of wire. Stakes shall be uniform in height and placed according <br />to diameter of tree trunk. <br />P. Trees 3-1/2" and larger in diameter shall be guyed with 3 guys equally <br />spaced about the tree. Guys shall be attached to the tree by means of a <br />hose collar of No. 12 ga, wire, double strand, encased in garden hose. <br />The collar shall be placed in she first crotch of the tree. Nose collars <br />shall be new, two ply fabric bearing garden hose not less than 1/2" inside <br />diameter. <br />Q. All deciduous trees shall be wrapped with material as specified. This <br />wrapping bandage shall be secure and firmly tied at top and bottom of the <br />trunk. The bandage shall cover the entire surface of the trunk to the <br />height of the first branches. Bandaging shall start at the base of the <br />tree unless otherwise specified. <br />R. Plants delivered with broken or disturbed balls indicating the soil has <br />been so loosened as to cause stripping of the small and fine feeding roots <br />will be rejected. <br />5264 <br />SECTION 02901 - 7 <br />
