1
In order to eliminate and/or minimize the possibility
of intermixing waste categories in
storage tanks, each
tank will be clearly labeled. Tank
1, used for acidic
wastes will be labeled with signage stating: "Acid
Wastes Only, No Cyanides or Sulfides." Tank 2 for
alkali wastes will be labeled: "Alkalis, Sulfides, and
Cyanides Only." Tank
3 for chromium wastes will be
labeled: "Chromium Wastes Only.,,
Wastes which are classified as flammables and/or
combustibles will be stored exclusively in the storage
area. All storage and handling
operations involving
flammable hazardous
waste; wili be conducted so as o
prevent accidental ,ignition. All containers in the
'
storage area will be closed containers.
During storage and handling operations, flammable
wastes will, be separated and protected from sources of
ignition, No
Smoking', signs will be conspicuously
displayed at all entrance
ways to the flammable storage
area and in all container transfer areas. During truck
loading and unloading orp,e:rat:ions, portable "No Smoking"
signs
will be displayed at each approach direction to
the operation..
All striking- tools (e.g. hammers) and equipment used
during, or in
the area of, flammable hazardous waste
handling and storage will be
nonsparking. All
electrical equipment and wiring (lights, alarms,
switches, etc.) used in the flammable liquid storage
area
will meet Class 1, Division 1 standards as
specified in NFPA70
National Electrical Code.
r
The flammable liquid waste storage area will be
equipped with both manual
■
(hand or,erated extinguishers)
and automatic (sprinkler
system) fire suppression
equipment. A Light -Water fire additive for the
sprinkler system will be used.
The entire container storage area will be enclosed.
The
area will be heated to at :east 60 degrees during
cold -weather months. All containers
of hazardous waste
stored within the building will be protected from all
weather conditions. Each storage bay will be designed
for holding the appropriately designated
wastes and
will be clearly labeled with
signs for the material to
be stored in that area.
3.40
Power E ui ment
. P and Tank Failure. Wastes will
be pumped into the treatment
system, and from one step
to the next. Liquid inorganic wastes will also be
pumped to storage tanks. In the event of power
failure, all
waste flow will stop to prevent overflow.
Power failure during storage and treatment would result
16.
