BREIVIK ENGINEERS, INC.
STRUCTURAL. CIVIL AND FORENSIC ENGINEERING
2999 YORKTON BOULEVARD Sy. PAUL, MINNESOTA 55117
(612)482.9500
Sept. 30, 198E
Mr. Mark Finneman
Finn -Daniels
4175 Lovell Rd.
Lexington,, MN. 55112
RE: Casci Complex
Roseville, MN.
Edge wall at podding area detail.
Dear Mr. Finneman,
The cast concrete wall detail shown as an edge to the storm
water detention pond is, in my opinion, a satisfactory detail
which does not compromise safety or increas, deterioration.
The concern of the city staff, is assumedly, i:he impact of
the freeze)'thaw process on the integrity of the wall. Its
use as a pond occurs in warm weather and does not effect
either the wall design or footing design. The detail,
without brick, indicates a 16" wall with 6" of cover over
vertical reinforcing on the pond side. The building code
requires a minimum of 2" of cover for concrete exposed to
earth or weather. Even if the brick veneer is used in lieu
of the concrete. The 2" cover required by the code still
exists. Water is typically moved away from foundations of
any type, not because of the consequence to the wall itself,
but because of the possible passage of water into the area
behind the wall. This wall meets the building code and is of
proper construction.
Even the application of brick can provide a serviceable wall.
The brick should be grade SW (severe weather) the joints
tooled tightly, weeps installed along the bottom of the brick
and a coat of silicone sealer added. The greatest
consequencr)s (gi•-en the maximum exposure to water) would be
the possible to,-,-c"nting of joints several years from now.
If it becomes .nt to maintain brick on this part of the
elevation, the. system desc-ir ',,bed above, should be
considered reas.— ble with a minor maintenance
qualifications.
Please let me know is any odditional information is required.
Very Truly Yours,
1
A.
