Roseville Public Works, Environment and Transportation Commission <br />Agenda Item <br />DATE: February 20, 2024 ITEM: 6.a. <br />ITEM DESCRIPTION: 2024 Sustainability Update <br />Background <br />Roseville residents highly value the sustainability, natural resources, and recreational opportunities in the <br />community, which is why the City has made it a priority to preserve, promote, and maintain these resources <br />Through the City's Comprehensive Plan, participation in programs such as GreenStep Cities, and projects <br />such as the ongoing wildlife habitat restoration in city parks, Roseville continues to strive toward building a <br />sustainable future for all residents, businesses, and visitors. For more information, see the Sustainability <br />webpage CityofRoseville.com/Sustainability. <br />As part of our sustainability work, the City participated in Xcel Energy's Partners in Energy Program. Staff <br />worked with Xcel Energy and the Center for Energy and Environment (CEE) to move the program forward. <br />Staff is very excited with how the program operated, and the advancements that were made to establish <br />goals and strategies in order to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. For more information, see the <br />Partners in Energy webpage CityofRoseville.com/Partners-in-Energy. <br />Roseville has been a leader in Sustainability in 2023 with the hiring of our full time Sustainability Specialist. <br />With the increased capacity, we were involved in the GreenStep Cities Gold Leaf Program, researching a <br />Green To Go ordinance, several EV and efficiency -related cohorts, tabling at City events, etc. 2024 will <br />continue several of our past topics that include Less Mow May, Pollinator -Friendly Community, and looking <br />into the City's mowing ordinance. Staff will also be working on a Climate Action Plan and starting 4-6 months <br />of community engagement ahead of a potential Green To Go Ordinance proposal later this year. <br />Green Team Update: <br />On May 7, 2018, the City Council approved Resolution #11507 that named the Public Works Environment <br />and Transportation Commission as the Green Step Cities Green Team. <br />Per the resolution, the Green Team shall: <br />1. Approve and make available to the community an annual sustainability update report containing <br />goals and outcomes of community plans and sustainability initiatives. <br />2. Evaluate existing and proposed policies to identify any overlooked opportunities for pursuing <br />sustainability and environmental stewardship, and make recommendations for amending these <br />policies. <br />3. Undertake its best efforts to communicate with and engage residents, businesses, and institutions in <br />the implementation of sustainable practices to help meet City goals. <br />4. Advise City staff members and officials on efforts to educate community members about the City's <br />vision and ongoing opportunities to participate in sustainability initiatives. <br />5. Collect feedback from the community and provide recommendations for utilizing this feedback to <br />improve City practices and programs. <br />6. Provide recommendations for further research and programs to implement in the City to promote <br />sustainability and protect the environment. <br />Recommendation <br />Receive a presentation from staff about our sustainability programs and provide feedback on 2023 <br />Page 41 of 71 <br />
