1 <br />NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE <br />NAZARETH HALL ADDITION --SCHEMATIC DESIGN 19 DECEMBER, 1985 <br />Nazareth Hall is located on the north end of the college <br />campus with Lake Johanna on its east and north sides. The <br />building was erected in 1922 by the St. Raul Archdiocese For <br />a catholic seminary and was designed by the Boston <br />architectural firm of Moginnis and Walsh (commission No. <br />518). The building and campus were purchased by <br />Northwestern College In 1972 and has since that time served <br />many diverse functions. The addition presented in this report <br />infills one of the two V shaped courtyards defined by the <br />original building. This courtyard faces slightly east of south <br />and it bordered (in the existing building) by the chapel, <br />academic spaces, and KTIS Radio. <br />Dedgn Irdluams The physical manifestation of the college's programmatic <br />needs In this oddl lion was of fected by various constraints. <br />Externally: <br />- by the varying heights of the building mass defining the <br />coottyard. <br />- by the gabled roofs that pitch Into the courtyard. <br />- by the limitation established by the city of Arden Hills <br />fhat the addition not expand beyond the walls of Nazareth <br />hag I, <br />- by the "southern European" .style architecture on <br />Nazareth hall and the desire to blend in with the original <br />building as much as poulble. <br />- by the presence of the sacristy In the courtyard and the <br />wish to preserve this portion of the original building. <br />Internals; x <br />- by the location of the five major users of the additionn in <br />the existing building — Food Services, KTIS Radio, Blue <br />Room, Classroorns, or-0 Library. <br />- by the need to fie the addition into the existing corridor <br />system for smooth movement and proper egress. <br />- by the request of the college to maintain natural light on <br />stained glass windows in the enclosed wall of the chapel. <br />- by the need for a new entrance Into the addition which by <br />its location would become the primary public entrance to <br />the building. <br />Copt: The overriding concept of this addition after the functional <br />needs of the users were satisfied was to relate the exterior <br />character of the infill to the original building as closely as <br />possible.
