REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Date: 3/18/2024
Item No.: 5.a.
Department Approval City Manager Approval

Item Description: Arbor Day Proclamation

Background
As a part of our Tree City USA membership, each year the City of Roseville proclaims a
specific day as Arbor Day to recognize the importance of trees, to promote their proper
care, and to promote the planting of many additional appropriate tree species to replace the
thousands that have been lost over the years.

Policy Objectives
This is consistent with the policy adopted many years ago of annually proclaiming Arbor
Day and the Community Aspiration of being "a community that treasures and preserves
natural areas and open space and prioritizes environmental conservation and
sustainability."

Racial Equity Impact Summary
Research shows that nationwide many neighborhoods of color have significantly less tree
cover than more white neighborhoods. Met Council data shows that these trends occur on
a regional level as well.

Roseville’s ongoing commitment to its urban forest, including the Accelerated Emerald Ash
Borer program and volunteer tree planting events, reflects the city’s commitment to
ensuring that all residents, regardless of race or economic means, experience the benefits
of a robust urban forest, including climate resilience, health benefits, emotional benefits and
more.

Budget Implications
None.

Staff Recommendations
Staff recommends that April 26, 2024 be named Roseville Arbor Day.

Requested Council Action
Motion adopting the proclamation

Qbhf!3!pg!241
