PAGE 4 SUSTAINABILITY NEWSLETTER
City of Roseville Public Works & Engineering
Positive Climate News
Heat pumps slash emissions, even when powered by a dirty grid - An
NREL study finds that heat pumps reduce carbon pollution regardless of the
grid mix, on average between 36% and 64% per household or 2.5 to 4.5
metric tons of carbon per year. Based on an interactive map from NREL,
Minnesotans could save over 6 metric tons of carbon installing a high effi-
ciency cold climate heat pump in combination with other efficiency
measures. Our renewable energy mix from Xcel Energy is higher than many utilities, so Ro-
seville residents should feel confident making the switch to a heat pump!
Minnesota lawmakers look to put packaaina companies on the hook for materials
waste - bill recently introduced in the legislature would require all packaging in Minnesota to
be recyclable or compostable by 2035. By putting pressure on the source of materials pro-
duction, less burden is placed on the consumer within the product life cycle. First, the land is painstakingly prepared, usually
with compost and mulch. Then, native trees and shrubs are planted close together, encour-
aging the flora to rapidly grow. According to proponents, Miyawaki-style forests become self-
sufficient within three years and can achieve maturity within a few decades. Along the way,
they provide habitat for insects and wildlife, absorb carbon and clean the air.
Thank you from your Roseville Sustainability Team!
Ryan Johnson
Environmental Manager
651-792-7049
Ryan.Johnson(cDcitvofroseville.com
1', -414
AL

SOLSMART
G D L D
Minnesota
GreenStep Cities
Noelle Bakken
Sustainability Specialist
651-792-7057
Noelle.Bakken(cDcityofroseville.com
0
0
BI
In
W
Z
Z
BEST OF
83 BENCHMARKING
