Attachment 1
ALLIANT
Memorandum
TO: Ryan Johnson, City of Roseville
FROM: David Bauer, PSS
DATE: December 29, 2022
SUBJECT: Roseville Compost Top -dressing and Soil Testing Annual Report: Year 1
Project Summary
Newly created soils in 2021 along a new segment of the Twin Lakes trail will receive annual 1/2 top -dressed compost soil
amendments for three years. Soils will be tested annually to assess soil health benefits of the compost amendments. The
following areas were selected for testing:
• Swale Native Vegetation
• Swale Edge Turf
• Top of Berm Native Vegetation
• Top of Berm Native Vegetation Control
• Toe of Berm Turf
• Toe of Berm Turf Control
Results and Trends
One year has gone by and the trends indicate that compost topdressing is improving soil health and helping plants grow.
Plants in compost areas seemed taller and healthier than in areas that did not receive a compost treatment. All areas have
experienced positive change, but the compost top -dressing area's changes are more pronounced. In coming years, we
hope to estimate how many years the plant establishment was accelerated due to compost topdressing.
Topography also seems to be more of a factor than expected. The flat areas near the path have shown increased soil
health, taking advantage of captured nutrients and water. The heart of the swale behaves more like a control area, despite
receiving compost. The swale is compacted, so the combination of flowing stormwater and reduced soil pores might be
reducing the compost's benefits in the first year.
2022 Tasks
-June 13, 2022: Soil Testing
-October 10, 2022: Soil Testing
-October 15, 2022: Compost Top -dressing*
-October 18, 2022: Presented Project at Minnesota Water Resources Conference*
-December 2, 2022: Presented Project at Minnesota Association of Professional Soil Scientist Winter Meeting*
-December 8, 2022: Presented Project at Minnesota Seeing Contractors Association Annual Meeting*
-December 2022: Data Analysis and Annual Report
*Volunteer tasks
733 Marquette Ave Ste 700 612.758.3080 MAIN
Minneapolis, MN 55402 612.758.3099 FAx www.alliant-inc.com
Page 33 of 69
