Attachment 1
As we continue to work through the 2024 Natural Resources Master Plan update, the topic of
increased City resources dedicated to natural resources has been a frequent recommendation from
the Community Technical Advisory Committee and consultants. The forthcoming planwill
include a project list (sample attached) of more than 300 natural resources projects for City staff,
consultants, and volunteers to undertake. Execution of these projectswill require management
and organization form the City.
The elevation of this position to the supervisor level (grade 13) will allow this person to supervise
staff and effectively manage volunteers, develop programming, and directly manage projects
related to Natural Resources and Forestry.
Recruitment of Qualified Candidates:The previous Part Time Forestry Coordinator position
was created,in part, because of the availability of a qualified candidate who wanted to work part-
time. Staff feel that we are unlikely to recruit and retain a qualified candidate for a half-time
position. Although it is unlikely that we will find a candidate who has sufficient background in
both natural resources and forestry, the overlap between education, skill set, and philosophical
needs of the two areaswill allow us to use the additional 50% time to g
natural resources program.
Sustainability Goals:Transitioning to a full-time Forestry and Natural Resources Supervisor
aligns with the City's broader sustainability goals. This position would play a key role in
developing and implementing policies that support our climate action plans, enhance biodiversity,
and promote ecological resilience.
OUTCOMES
It is anticipated that the transition of the Part-TimeForestry Coordinator Position to Full-Time
Forestry and Natural Resources Supervisor will yield the following outcomesin relatively short
order:
Implementation of the forthcoming Natural Resources Master Plan update and project
list.
Creation and execution of a ten-year urban forest master plan.
Improved training and organization ofnatural resourcesvolunteers who wish to lead
volunteer activities.
natural resourceevents per year.
Revitalization of the adopt-a-
resources work.
Improvements in park maintenance and project management.

Qbhf!243!pg!417
