<br />National Gun Violence Awareness Day and Month <br />June 6, 2025 <br />June 2025 <br />Whereas:Americans are, on average, 26 times more likely to die by gun homicide <br />than people in other high-income countries; and <br />Whereas:According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, gun violence kills <br />125 Americans and injures more than 200 every day. Each year, more than 18,000 people in <br />the United States die from gun homicides; and <br />Whereas:In 2023, firearms were the leading cause of death of children under 18 in the <br />United States, taking the lives of 4,455 young people; and <br />Whereas:Gun violence disproportionally impacts Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. <br />Black youth are 18 times more likely than white children to die by gun violence. Hispanic and <br />Indigenous people also die by gun violence at twice the rate of white people; and <br />Whereas:In Minnesota, there are on average 527 gun-related deaths and 1,174 non-fatal <br />injuries each year. This includes 143 homicides and 583 injuries from assaults with guns; <br />and <br />Whereas:Roseville is not immune to gun violence. On April 5, 2022, an individual <br />recklessly fired shots on West Lake Owasso Boulevard, hitting homes and cars and <br />seriously injuring Roseville Police Officer Ryan Duxbury; and <br />Whereas:Roseville and cities across the country are working to end gun violence <br />with evidence-based solutions, including integration of social services and mental <br />health support into public safety work, holding gun turn-in events for community <br />members to dispose of unwanted guns, and providing gun-locks free of charge to allow <br />residents to better secure their guns in their homes; and <br />Whereas:Protecting public safety is one of the City’s most important responsibilities; <br />and <br />Qbhf!6!pg!226 <br /> <br />
