Crime Survey

Self reported delinquency (SRD)

Table 1 shows the results, only for acts committed outside in a public place. Each
young person was scored according to the number of different acts he or she admitted.
The key result is that the total SRD score of the experimental youth decreased after the
improved lighting, compared with the SRD score of the control youth. Experimental from
3.43 acts before (out of a possible 25) to 2.23 acts after, and the control from 2.99 acts
before to 2.57 after.

I Experimental II Control I
I Outside IIBefore (140)IIAfter (170)IIBefore (167)IIAfter (164)1
IViolence II 2.25 II 1.36 I 2.03 II 1.51 I
IVandalism II 0.55 II 0.45 0.46 II 0.51 I
IDishonesty II 0.14 II 0.13 0.10 II 0.16 I
ITotal SRD II 3.43 II 2.23 2.99 II 2.57 I
IOutside in dark I
I Violence II 1.07 II 0.64 II 0.78 II 0.79 I
IVandalism II 0.32 II 0.31 II 0.29 II 0.31 I
I Dishonesty II 0.06 II 0.08 II 0.05 II 0.06 I
I Substance use II 0.42 II 0.25 II 0.10 II 0.16 I
ITotal SRD II 1.88 II 1.28 II 1.49 II 1.46 I

Table 1 - Self-reported delinquency scores

Victimisation of young people

Table 2 shows the results for the total victimisation scale, for outside victimisations only.
Disappointingly, there was no significant tendency for victimisation to decline more in
the experimental area than in the control area.

Crime, fear of crime and youths hanging around

Table 2 shows the average crime problem score decreased by 23% in the experimental
area (from 2.53 to 1.95) but only 5% in the control area (2.04 to 1.93). These results are
remarkably similar to those obtained previously for the prevalence of crime in the
household victimisation survey.

Table 2 shows that the average fear of crime score decreased by 17% in the
experimental area (from 3.56 to 2.95), but increased by 8% in the control area (from
3.25 to 3.52). The change in the experimental area was significantly different from the
change in the control area. Clearly, therefore, the young peoples fear of crime after dark
in the experimental area decreased significantly after the improved street lighting. There
were also indications in the household victimisation survey that fear of crime had
decreased in the experimental area.

I Experimental II Control I
IVictimisation Outside I Before After Before After
(140) (170) (167) (164)
ICriminal II 0.94 II 0.64 II 0.87 II 0.59 I

http://www.urbislighting.com/switchon3_6 .php3

7/30/2002
