Roseville Public Works and Transportation Commission

Agenda Item

Date: Mareh 23, 2004

Item No: 5

Item Description: City of Roseville City-wide Clean-Up Initiatives

Every year, City staff, volunteers and others spend a considerable amount of time keeping the
City clean. Existing efforts include:

. Coordinate biannual street sweeping of all City streets and pathways
.. Regular grass tTimming along certain boulevards and streets and in City parks
. Identify and pick up trash in problem areas
. Coordinate Clean Up Day where residents can bring items that can't go in the regular trash
. Answer residents' questions on how to dispose of items that can't go in the trash
. Place trash cans on City property with heavy pedestrian trafflc
. Coordinate Adopt-a-Park program where groups adopt City parks and regularly pick up trash and
report problems or needed repairs to the Parks and Recreation Department
. Host Earth Day activities to provide public education about protecting the earth and litter
prevention
. Work with area businesses and individuals to pick up litter and to address code violations
. Permit Ramsey County to operate drop off site for hazardous materials in June
. Dredge City ponds and lakes, as needed

These efforts take considerable time and money, but well worth the effort to keep the City clean
and to protect the environment. However, citizens have come forward requesting additional
work and offering to help pick up litter, particularly in spring when litter becomes more visible
after the snow melts. In late January the City Council approved creating an ad hoc litter control
committee and allocated $2,500 to fund the project. The City hired Patty Hoag to coordinate a
city-wide litter pick up effort in April.

Patty pulled together a committee of 11 people from businesses, churches, Roseville Area
Schools, service organizations, employees and the community. Representatives from each of
those groups are responsible to recruit additional volunteers. The committee discussed several
ways to promote litter pick during the month of April. These include: Proclamation declaring
April as Keep Roseville Beautiful month, letters to the editor, news releases, Roseville Wrap,
infOlmation on the Web and Cable Channel 16, letters to area businesses, churches, civic
organizations and neighborhood watch participants. Carolyn Curti, the City's Communications
specialist will be at our meeting to discuss the committee's efforts.

Recommended Action: No action required at this time.
