Roseville Public Works and Transportation Commission

Agenda Item

Date: February 22, 2005

Item No: 5

Item Description: Transit Shelter Discussion

At their January work session, the City Council considered the Commission's recommendation
to move forward with Transtop of Mn. on the installation of transit shelters in the city. They
concurred with your recommendation and asked staff to move forward with a hearing on the
proposed sites and your approval of a shelter design. We will bring a granting ordinance to the
Council on March 14th if the Commission approves the potential sites and shelter design at the
February 22nd meeting.

We are attaching a map of28 proposed sites. Transtop is asking approval of these sites knowing
that some will not ultimately be suitable due to field conditions that may be discovered during
development. Their hopes are to install 20 shelters at this time. You previously established the
following criteria for shelter sites:

1. The site needed to be an existing Metro Transit bus stop
2. A clear line of sight needed to be maintained for vehicles
3. A clear line of sight needed to be maintained for transit users
4. Electric service must be available
5. The shelter needed to be set back from the curb at least 4 feet
6. The site must be visible for cross traffic
7. The location must have a commercial / industrial land use

Weare seeking your feedback based on these criteria.

We are also attaching shelter design information we have received from Transtop. They would
like to use the same style shelter they used in Minneapolis and St. Paul to standardize parts; but it
would be nice if the shelters were slightly different to identify that they are in Roseville, such as
adding our logo and/or a different color metal.

We have sent notice to all properties within 350' of each of the proposed sites regarding a
hearing before the Commission on February 22,2005.

Representatives from Transtop will be at the hearing to answer questions and present sample
proposed site plans. After hearing comment from the public, you may want to reaffirm your
acceptance or denial of certain sites.

Recommended Action:

Motion to approve desired shelter sites and shelter design.
