TCMRF Single-Sort Constituent Test

. Post-Screens Sorting

. Paper from the screens is checked and sorted by hand as necessary to separate
materials into the appropriate categories.
. Containers proceed to the tipping floor portion of the TCMRF for processing on
separate sorting equipment. Paper mixed with these containers, not separated by
the screens, is removed by hand and recycled with other paper.

For this test, both in-feed and process lines for the single-sort system were used. Staffing
levels were consistent with normal operations for running both sides. No additional
sorters were added to improve sorting operations for this test. Ten persons were provided
for pre-screens sorting and ten were provided for post-screens sorting.

The following categories represent materials produced/sorted from the single-sort process
system:

. acc
. Mixed Paper
. Unrecoverable material (categorized as residue)
. Scrap steel
. Newspaper
. Containers, tributary to additional processing

Container Process System Described: CP Manufacturing supplied the container sorting
system for the TCMRF. In some single-sort facilities, there is no break in the flow of
materials from the paper sorting and screening equipment to the container sorting
equipment. At the TCMRF, containers from the single-sort process system proceed to
the tipping floor section of the facility for separate feeding to the container process
system.

During normal daily operations, the containers fall from an elevated conveyor on the
single-sort process equipment onto a pile of other containers. This helps cushion the fall
and prevents some breakage of glass bottles. For this test, the tipping floor was
completely emptied prior to the start of the test, eliminating such a pile. In order to
mimic the normal daily operations, a bucket loader was used to catch containers from the
single-sort process system. When the bucket was full, the loader operator proceeded to
the infeed conveyor for the container process system. While loading the system,
containers from the single-sort process system were allowed to fall directly to the floor.
In this way, some cushioning and some falling were provided for the test in an effort to
mimic actual operating conditions.

5
