The wheels are from a <br />standard wheel kit sold by many recycling <br />bin vendors. Participants were told that <br />many people like to use two bins so they <br />can have one bin for paper products and <br />one for bottles and cans. This method <br />tested the convenience of additional bin <br />storageyapacity and wheeled containers. <br />These residents remained on the every <br />other week collection cycle. Residents <br />were not restrict~.~ to using just the two <br />blue bins and sonieparticipants used their <br />existing recycling containers to <br />supplement the two.bins. <br /> <br />When asked in the pre-survey what would <br />motiy~tethem to recycle more the top <br />respoI)sewas a financial rebate listed by <br />37.8% of respondents. <br /> <br />Residents had the lowest participation and <br />set out rates in the "before" period. But <br />they had the highest increase in both rates <br />in the "during" period. This areaw~m. fr()11178.J!1'to 99.9% participation and 62.9% to 78.2% set out rate. <br />They went from sixth~()seson~ highestin participati()nand from sixth to third highest in set out rate. <br /> <br />Participants inc.;r~ased the amoul1!pfrecyc!iJ;1gput out for collection per person. The mean pounds per <br />household collecte~went from 20.0:lin the "before" period to 26.87 in the "during" period. <br /> <br />Sixty-nine percent of resi4ents said they preferred the two bin system. Respondents were not asked if they <br />would be willing to pay niors because under the current program they can get the two bins with wheels <br />without an additional charge. <br /> <br />In the post-survey 62.6% of respondents said they liked the bins because they were easy to move and 61.2% <br />of respondents said they liked the convenience of using one bin for paper and one bin for bottles and cans. <br />On dislikes 18% ofrespondents said they didn't like the bins because they didn't have room in their garage <br />to store them. <br /> <br />Participants rated environmental benefit as the most important component in a recycling system with an <br />average score of 1.9. <br /> <br />31 <br />
