The wheels are from a standard wheel kit sold by many recycling bin vendors. Participants were told that many people like to use two bins so they can have one bin for paper products and one for bottles and cans. This method tested the convenience of additional bin storageyapacity and wheeled containers. These residents remained on the every other week collection cycle. Residents were not restrict~.~ to using just the two blue bins and sonieparticipants used their existing recycling containers to supplement the two.bins. When asked in the pre-survey what would motiy~tethem to recycle more the top respoI)sewas a financial rebate listed by 37.8% of respondents. Residents had the lowest participation and set out rates in the "before" period. But they had the highest increase in both rates in the "during" period. This areaw~m. fr()11178.J!1'to 99.9% participation and 62.9% to 78.2% set out rate. They went from sixth~()seson~ highestin participati()nand from sixth to third highest in set out rate. Participants inc.;r~ased the amoul1!pfrecyc!iJ;1gput out for collection per person. The mean pounds per household collecte~went from 20.0:lin the "before" period to 26.87 in the "during" period. Sixty-nine percent of resi4ents said they preferred the two bin system. Respondents were not asked if they would be willing to pay niors because under the current program they can get the two bins with wheels without an additional charge. In the post-survey 62.6% of respondents said they liked the bins because they were easy to move and 61.2% of respondents said they liked the convenience of using one bin for paper and one bin for bottles and cans. On dislikes 18% ofrespondents said they didn't like the bins because they didn't have room in their garage to store them. Participants rated environmental benefit as the most important component in a recycling system with an average score of 1.9. 31
