<br /> <br />4 adults killed at Jamboree <br /> <br />Leaders were with 80 Scouts from Alaska <br /> <br />BY MICHAEL FEI,BERllAUM <br />Associated Press <br /> <br />BOWLING GREEN, Va. - <br />Four adult Boy Scout leaders <br />from Alaska were killed Mon- <br />day .afternoon in an electrical <br />accident during the opening <br />day of the organization'S 2005 <br />Jamboree. <br />Jamboree spokesman Gregg <br />Shields said the accident hap- <br />pened between 4:30 and 5 p.m. <br />while the leaders were setting <br />up camp. <br />One other leader from Alas- <br />ka and a contract worker were <br />hospitalized in stable condi- <br />tion. The youP;s with the Alas- <br /> <br />ka group were fine, saId Bill <br />Haines,. chtef executive officer <br />of the Western Alaska Council. <br />Those killed were longthne <br />leaders with Anchorage's <br />Troop 711, which along with <br />another troop had brought 80 <br />teenage Scouts to the event, <br />Haines said. Three otber Seout <br />leaders had come with the <br />group. <br />Shields did not have any <br />additional details, including <br />the \~ctims' names. <br />The Washington Post, citing <br />a source it did not identtfy, said <br />a pole hltended as a support <br />for a tent came into contact <br />with an overhead powe;-'line. <br /> <br />Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warn- <br />er issued a statement Monday <br />seeking to reassure parents of <br />Jamboree participants. <br />''A remarkable amount of <br />effort and resources have been <br />brought to bear by the Boy <br />Scouts and their hosts, the <br />Department of Defense, in the <br />plallning and safety considera- <br />tions involved in creating, in <br />effect, a city of 43,000 inhabi- <br />tants for a 10-day period," <br />Warner said. <br />Tens of thousands of BoY <br />Scouts, leaders and volunteers <br />from around the world" are <br />attending the National Scout <br />Jamboree.
