Highway Department Tests Limestone Base The Minnesota Highway Department is now conduct- ing a two-year field study to evaluate limestone base for highway construction. Desig- nated Special Study No. 323, it will attempt to determine t~e _granular equivalen.cy (G.E.) factor of 100% crushed limestone base mater- ial relative to Minnesota High- way Department Class 5 and 6 granular base material. In the fall of 1971, test sections were constructed on T.H. 14 between the east junction of T.H. 19 and T.H. 282 near Prior Lake. The sec- tions have various thicknesses and types of base and subbase materials. Some sections are under-designed compared to the standard design for the project, and as such, will deteriorate at different rates. All sections will be evaluated each year or-at other appro- priate Intervals for traffic, ser- viceability and strength.
