I-IIGHWA Y DEPARTMENT TESTS (Continued f)'om Page 1)
"-~-~
---~

"CL.5

e'
\8

'6=
LIME STONE-
=

'"
Co>'-

//
CL.5

r:::::::Jc::::::;J/

/ //

c;.~

// ' I
e; IZ'
8\~ 5 '
, CL. " LIMESTONE '\ CL.o CL.3

~~5o' -i~5D-i~5D \g -i~:' -i~5d
c~~~~

A profile of granular base test sections in the M.H.D, study, Each of the 4 paired sections is 1000' long and
separated by 50' to provide an adequate length for tapers,

~

ular equivalent factors be
continued for the present.
But, because there has been
much discussion -and debate
over the- granular equivalent
of 100% crushed limestone
relative to class 5 and 6
material with less than 100%
crushing, it was proposed that
test sections be constructed
on a state highway to deter~
mi ne an appropriate G .E.
factor for 100% crushed lime-
stone meeting the gradation
requirement of class 5.

The Minnesota Limestone
Producers Association, of

/

which the J. L. Shiely Com-
pany is a member, is cooper~
ating with the Minnesota
Highway Department in this
study. For example, the Asso~
ciation has contributed
approximately 5,000 tons of
100% crushed limestone free
of charge for construction of
the test sections.

The Association believes
that, when concluded, the
study will show 100%
crushed limestone to have a
higher granular equivalency
than the class 5 and 6,
granular material.

Construction of the test sections began last fall. They are located near
Prior Lake on T.H. 14."

Second Drier Installed
for Heated Aggregates

A new aggregate drier unit has been installed and put into
operation at Shiely's Distribution Yard "C". It is the second
drier for. the company. The first was installed three years ago
in Yard HA" in St. Paul.
The new drier supplies heated aggregate to Ready Mixed
Concrete Company. It enables contractors to order concrete at
temperatures desirable for cold weather construction.
Other customers who benefit from heated aggregates are
roofing contractors who buy Shiely's roofing gravel. During
winter, these contractors formerly experienced problems of
moisture-laden and frozen gravel. Now, their heated gravel
contains less than one-half of one percent moisture. This pro-
vides better bond between gravel and asphalt when construct-
ing flat deck roofs.
Another pleased customer is Twin City Concrete Products,
the local distributor of Sakrete. All Sakrete products are
packaged aud thus must be dry. Shiely's heated sand helps the
customer maintain a full production schedule for Sakrete at a
critical time of the year.
. Like its' predecessor, the new aggregate drier is equipped
WIth the latest, fully approved air pollution abatement devices
to protect the environment from dust. Little or none escapes
from the unit.

Shiely Solves
Slippery Problem
for Realtor

How do you keep apart~
ment premises safely ice~free
during these notorious Minne-
sota winters ~- without ruin-
ing walks and killing plantlife
with large doses of salt?
That's the problem that
was posed to Shiely this past
fan by the Property Manage-
ment Dept. of the Eherhardt
Company, a major Twin
Cities realty firm. Eberhardt
operates a large number of
apartment complexe-s. Their
managers, responsible for
keeping walkways free of ice,
had used a 100% mixture of
salt. It did the job well, hut
proved injurious to concrete
walks and often killed adjoin-
ing grass and shrubs. - Also,
Eberhardt requested, how
about a bit more traction?
Shiely accepted the chal-
lenge. And succeeded. The
solution: sand for traction,
mixed with a small percen.
tage of salt. Further, the sand
was dried in order to keep the
salt in crystal forin.
After thorough mixing in a
concrete ready-mix truck, the
sand-salt combination was
hagged in handy 25 lb. plastic
sacks and d-elivered to Eber-
hardt's apartment properties.
It has turned out to be not
only a practical but also an
economical solutionl to a
slippery prohlem.

Aggregate
Seminar Slated
for late February

For the seventh consecu-
tive .year,_ Shiely will -hold a
seminar for area -architects
and engineers. Spqnsored
annually by the sales depart-
ment, this year's sessibnswill
take place Fehruary .23rd at
the Minnesota Club, down-
town Sl. .Paul.

Last year's meeting at-
tracted 80 participants_ from
leading architectural and engi-
neering firms in the Twin
Cities, a figure expected to be
topped in 1972. Among ten-
tatively scheduled subjects
are the Minnesota Highway
Test Section (described else-
where in this issue of Corner-
stoneL the influence of aggre.
gates o~ flexural strengths of
concrete, stone base job suc-
cesses during 1971, soils and
their influence in design,
"pop out free" stone con~
crete and a discussion by a
bituminous contractor and an
architect on better specifica-
tiou to get the best design at
the most economical cost to
the client. Norm Henning of
Twin City Testing Labora-
tories will be a guest speaker.
Vice President-Sales Lowery
Smith will direct the proceed~
ings, assisted by John Palda.

As in the past, the seminar
is designed to be highly infor-
mative to all attendees.
Earlier sessions have featured
a wide-ranghig number of
topics, including base designs
for crushed stone, chemical
reactions to aggregates in
portland cement, mineral
filler applications and soils
engineering for pavements. In
keeping with its policy to
pass along, as well as to know
more about aggregates than
anyone else in the business,
Shiely utilizes tq_e Bt:~inars to
acquaint architeCts"~i~"" _~_<>_
neers with the latest informa.
tion in th~_ irfdustry d in oxder
to help them fulfill their
responsibility to write specifi-
cations involving the various
types of aggregate . "

Johnny Witthans observes a new winter boon to Shiely customers: Yard
C's aggregate drier.
