Roseville Public Works, Environment and
Transportation Commission

Agenda Item

Date: June 27, 2006

Item No: 6

Item Description: Update on Pedestrian Safety Subcommittee Meeting

A subcommittee of Chair Wilke, Commissioner Neprash, and Park and Recreation Commission
Members Mark Kamrath and Sarah Brudt Lenz, met on Jun 22, 2006, to further discuss
implementation of pedestrian safety improvements. The group reviewed several crosswalk
treatments / signage installations that could be used to improve visibility or get drivers' attention.
They included:

Flashing light installations
Centerline paddle signage
Double-faced signed marking crosswalks
Enhanced paintable message schedules
Flag holders with signage

The Committee felt staff should proceed to purchase centerline paddle signs for installation at
high-use crosswalks. These would be portable and would be moved to various locations to
educate drivers in various areas of the city. The group also agreed on an additional flasher at a
Central Park crosswalk, with Dale Street being first choice. Staff will also look into upgrade of
the Lexington A venue at Oakcrest crosswalk to a pedestrian-activated flasher.

We also discussed additional seasonal painting of crosswalks, with staff monitoring this spring's
painting for brightness through the season. We will also request additional no parking on
Victoria at Central Park with Ramsey County.

Recommended Action:

Additional discussion if desired.
