HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MEETING

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1983

I. Call To Order. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Bentley at
8:00 p.m.

II. Roll Call. Members Present: Bentley, Hays, Mackey, McKenzie, Nackerud,
Thomas, and Zalk.

Members Absent: Bailey, Henry, and Zielske.

Others Present: Ron Moerse, staff.

III. Business.

A. Bentley distributed several local grievances which are being handled
at the State level.

B. Bentley distributed a notice from the MLHRC regarding International
Human Rights Day, to be celebrated December la, 1983.

C. Bentley advised commission members that Ambassador Philip Habib would
be at the Northrup Auditorium on WedneSday, November 16.

D. Jackie Hays discussed her assigned no-fault grievance. The grievance
concerns an employee who has been on medical leave. The employee is
restricted physically, but is recovering. The company nurse advised
the employee to be prepared for termination when the medical leave ends.
The employee's former department has been shut down, but the firm
normally retains employees for positions in new departments.

Jackie is going to talk to the firm's Personnel people to clarify the
situation and to find out whether it is normal procedure for the
nurse to advise employees of upcoming termination.

E. The COrumUssion discussed the suggestion, made by Don Zalk at the
October meeting, that a statement be developed in support of the
Sta~e Department of Human Rights to counter the negative findings
of the Legislative Auditor's report on MOHR operations. The letter
should be directed to the Governor and to our State legislators.
