<br />Maplewood Ruman Relations Commi~sion <br />M"mntes from Apr. 2, 1996 <br /> <br />Present: Marie Koehler, Gordy Heininger, Regina Laroche- Theune, Lynne Croes, <br />Carol Cude, Maria Cantu-CostIl1a, Linda Wainio. Ex-officio: Mike McGuire, Sherrie Le. <br /> <br />GoesfS: Mort Ryweck - League of Minnesota Human Righls Commissions; Representatives <br />from the Roseville, White Bear Lake and StiIlwater (high school) HRCs. <br /> <br />11\e meeting was called to order at 7: 10 pm by Chair C..ordy Heininger Mike McGuire introduced <br />himself and welcomed everyone to the joint meeting. M.ike stated that human rights is a high <br />priority in Maplewood He then turned the meeting hack to the chair, Gordy Heininger. <br /> <br />All in attendance introduced themselves. <br /> <br />The agenda included short presentations by members of the Maplewood and Roseville <br />cOlllmissions. The Maplewood commisssion shared information on the following: <br /> <br />Diversity Awareness Aw;ud Contest - C;uol Cude <br />Diversity Awareness Posier Contesi - Lynne Croes <br />Open House - Marie Koehler <br />Response to Bias and Prejudice plan - Gordy Heininger <br />Commlmity event - Regina Laroche- Theune <br /> <br />Members from tbe Roseville commission shared how they are using the cOIllillimity cable access <br />channel to r<'-'leh out to the community. They have plans to produce a regular program and to <br />offer public service spots using the LMBRC posters. They sponsor an essay contest for the <br />midelle school students The theme of tbe Roseville HRC is to create partnerships with other <br />lIRe's, the police department and other groups. They have given out an Award ofExcelJence to <br />businesses for human relations. The bnsinesses afe recognized for how they make a difference or <br />did something uniqne concerning human relations. The winners for the essay contest and the <br />husiness awards are recognized at a city counCil meeting They have a budget to use for t.he <br />award plaques. <br /> <br />Mr. Ryweck interjected that the HRe's could work together to develop a video series and each <br />individual ERC he responsible for one program that would he shown on the cable access <br />chantlelS <br /> <br />Stillwater High School sponsored a logo contest filr tileir commissiolL EntJ"ies came from the <br />comrrmnity and the elementary schools. In response to an incident involving some elementary <br />students, some high school students gave presentations to the younger students on harassment. <br /> <br />White Bear Lake also has an award progrilm, for a group and an individual. They seck <br />nominations tilfough the local paper. Any individual or group who has worked to improve human <br />relations can be nominated Ibey also present a plaqne to the winners at a city ccunci] meeting. <br /> <br />(OVER-t) <br />
