<br />HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES <br />TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11,1997 <br /> <br />1. Call to Order <br />The meeting was called to order by Chairman Mike Trainor at 7:05 p.m. <br /> <br />2. Roll Call <br />Members present: Issac Afwerke, Jill Bergquist, Janet Henquinet, Mike Hermes, <br />Thelma McKenzie, and Mike Trainor. <br /> <br />Members absent: Mary Jean Turinia Anderson, Susan Forsyth, and Chris Malark. <br /> <br />3. Approval of Minutes <br />Janet Henquinet moved, Jill Bergquist seconded, that the minutes of the November <br />12, 1996 meeting be approved. Roll Call, Ayes: All present. Nays: None. <br /> <br />4. Committee Reports <br />A. Bias/Hate Crimes <br />No new reports received. <br /> <br />B. Cable <br />Mike Trainor will speak with Steve North regarding the possibility of showing the <br />Annual League Meeting video on the local access channel. <br /> <br />Mike Hermes is going to meet with the Sue Gehrz, Mayor of Falcon Heights, <br />regarding the possibility of a joint cable venture focusing on human rights. <br /> <br />C. Human Rights Essay Contest <br />Issac Afwerke reported that the contest award presentation at the February 10, <br />1997 Council meeting was a success. The first, second, and third place <br />winners read their essays to the Council. The Commission acknowledges the <br />hard work and dedication of Commissioners Issac Afwerke and Chris <br />Malark-well done! The Commission would also like to thank Jerry Beck for his <br />excellent job of making the certificates presented to all participants of the <br />contest. <br /> <br />D. Human Rights Excellence Award <br />No response to date. It was suggested that the Commission target groups such <br />as the Rotary Club and the Suburban Chamber of Commerce. Hopefully the <br />Commission would receive nominations from these sources. <br /> <br />5. Grievance Update <br />None received. <br />
