<br />HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES <br />TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13,1998 <br /> <br />1) Call to Order <br />The meeting was called to order by Jill Bergquist at 7:10pm. <br /> <br />2) Roll Call <br />Members present: Issac Afwerke, Jill Bergquist, Eric Egli, Mike Hermes, and Thelma <br />McKenzie. <br /> <br />Members Absent:, Brenda Boily-Salmanpour, Jan Gordon, and Janet Henquinet. <br /> <br />Others Present: Amy Boeckermann, Student, Andrea Kasel, Student, Marcella <br />Houser, Youth Representative, and Debbie Zamow, Staff Liaison. <br /> <br />3) Approval of Minutes <br />Hermes moved, McKenzie seconded that the minutes from the September 15 <br />meeting be approved. Motion passed unanimously. <br /> <br />4) Joint Programs with School District <br />Because Dr. John Thein and Steve Bloom from the Roseville School District <br />attended the September 15 Commission meeting, Bergquist inquired if any <br />Commissioners had comments or ideas for partnering. <br /> <br />Houser introduced the reformation of Ethnic Alliance at the high school. Although <br />the group is still looking for an advisor, she asked for the Commissioners help either <br />by providing speakers, or possibly being an advisor if a school teacher will not fill the <br />role. The Commission welcomed her idea and offered their support. <br /> <br />5) 1998 League Annual Conference <br />McKenzie announced that the annual conference was successful even if it was not <br />well attended. Both she and Bergquist remarked how entertaining the performers <br />were. <br /> <br />6) Statewide Human Rights Essay Contest <br />The League of MN Human Rights Commissions has approved rules and a question <br />for the statewide Human Rights Essay Contest. The entry deadline has been set as <br />February 1 and the winners are scheduled to be announced March 1. <br /> <br />Essay questions will be sent to the Roseville School Superintendent, the School <br />Principals, and the School Social Studies Department Head. The commission <br />determined the deadlines for the local contest are as follows: <br />Mail to schools October 23 <br />Deadline for return November 25 <br />Winners chosen December 8 <br />
