<br />HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES <br />TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10,1998 <br /> <br />1) Call to Order <br />The meeting was called to order by Jill Bergquist at 7:05pm. <br /> <br />2) Roll Call <br /> <br />Members present: Issac Afwerke, Jill Bergquist, Janet Gordon, Janet <br />Henquient and Michael Jordon. <br /> <br />Members Absent: Brenda Boily-Salmanpour, Thelma McKenzie, Susan <br />Forsyth, Mike Hermes, and Mike Trainor. <br /> <br />Others Present: Karen Kurt, Human Resources Director <br /> <br />3) Approval of Minutes <br /> <br />Jan Gordon moved to approved the minutes from the January meeting. Janet <br />Henquinet seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. <br /> <br />4) Committee Reports <br /> <br />A. Bias/Hate Crimes - No Report <br /> <br />B. Cable TVNideo - No Report <br /> <br />C. Human Rights Excellence Award - Information regarding the Award was <br />sent to local news outlets as part of the City's weekly press release. The <br />final draft of the letter for distribution to local business organizations was <br />submitted for signature by the co-chairs. <br /> <br />5) Grievance Update - No Report <br /> <br />6) 1997 Human Rights Essay Contest <br /> <br />Jill Bergquist reported that presentation of the contest awards went smoothly <br />at the City Council meeting. Certificates of participation for the students <br />were submitted to the co-chairs for signature. <br /> <br />7) Other Business/Announcement <br /> <br />Michael Jordon presented information from John Conbere & Associates <br />regarding peer mediation programs for schools (see handout). Jordan noted <br />that one of the biggest challenges in implementing this type of program is <br />getting "buy in" from management staff and faculty. Jordan is collecting <br />
