<br />HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES <br />TUESDAY, AUGUST 10, 1999 <br /> <br />1) Call to Order <br />The meeting was called to order by Jill Bergquist at 7: 1 Opm. <br /> <br />2) Roll Call <br />Members present: Issac Afwerke , Jill Bergquist, , Eric Egli, Thelma McKenzie, <br />Alexis Orosz, and Mary Vidas. <br /> <br />Members Absent: Brenda Boily-Salmanpour, Jan Gordon, Mike Hermes, Susan <br />Oliphant <br /> <br />Others Absent: Debbie Zamow, Staff Liaison. <br /> <br />3) Approval of Minutes <br />Orosz moved, McKenzie seconded that the minutes from the July 13 meeting be <br />approved. Motion passed unanimously. <br /> <br />4) Bias Complaint <br />Bergquist stated that the bias complaint from Lynn Torregano has been received. <br />Torregano reported that she was harassed by security guards and police officers but <br />she failed to specifically name the respondents or what she wishes the remedy to <br />be. Torregano will be contacted to verify who should be included in the mediation. <br />The bias alleged included race, color, sex and public accommodations. Bergquist <br />will try to obtain any record of citations issued and will check with the State <br />Department of Human Rights to be sure that the statute of limitations has not run <br />out <br /> <br />5) Human Rights Essay Contest <br />McKenzie presented that the LMHRC has mailed out the initial notice to cities <br />regarding the statewide essay contest A second mailing is pending. The LMHRC <br />deadline date is November 19, 1999. The local contest will be promoted to the <br />schools, the school superintendent and in local newspapers. Winners will be <br />announced in January. <br /> <br />6) Cable Program/Promotion <br />Vidas reported that she is ready to interview various Shoreview Human Rights <br />Commission members regarding their brochure, Children Who Care: Educating Your <br />Child about Human Rights. The brochure won an award for Excellence in <br />Communication from the League of Cities. Vidas is hopeful that an interview can be <br />completed on August 13. <br /> <br />The audio from the section on the tri-district school did not come out well and the <br />teacher may need to be re-interviewed. All other segments turned out well. <br />
