HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES TUESDAY, JANUARY 10,1999 1) Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Jill Bergquist at 7:10pm. 2) Roll Call Members present: Issac Afwerke, Jill Bergquist, Eric Egli, Jan Gordon, Mike Hermes, Susan Oliphant and Mary Vidas. Members Absent: Brenda Boily-Salmanpour, Janet Henquinet and Thelma McKenzie. Others Present: Debbie Zamow, Staff Liaison and Marcella Houser, Youth Representative. 3) Introduction of New Members The Commission welcomed two new members. Susan Oliphant will serve an unexpired term running until March 31,1999 and Mary Vidas will serve an unexpired term running until March 31,2000. 4) Approval of Minutes Hermes moved, Afwerke seconded that the minutes from the December 8 meeting be approved. Motion passed unanimously. 5) Bias Complaint As of the meeting date, neither complainant has returned an intake form. 6) Human Rights Essay Contest The essays winners are listed as follows: 1 st Place 2nd Place 3rd Place Honorable Mention Charlie Socha Craig Deutsch Robert Fandrich Pat Mitsch Becca Sullivan St. John the Evangelist St. Rose of Lima St. Rose of Lima St. Rose of Lima St. Rose of Lima Winners and their teachers have been notified by mail that they are invited to a ceremony at the City Council meeting of January 25. It was decided that due to the personal nature of many of the essays, the students will not be asked to read the essays at the Council meeting. The League of MN Human Rights Commissions entry deadline is February 1 and the winners are scheduled to be announced March 1. Because of the personal nature of some of the essays, it was discussed that names and identifying characteristics may need to be redacted if the essays are to be published or read on TV. Bergquist and Oliphant have agreed to read the initial entries for the Statewide contest.
