<br />HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES <br />TUESDAY, JANUARY 10,1999 <br /> <br />1) Call to Order <br />The meeting was called to order by Jill Bergquist at 7:10pm. <br /> <br />2) Roll Call <br />Members present: Issac Afwerke, Jill Bergquist, Eric Egli, Jan Gordon, Mike <br />Hermes, Susan Oliphant and Mary Vidas. <br /> <br />Members Absent: Brenda Boily-Salmanpour, Janet Henquinet and Thelma <br />McKenzie. <br /> <br />Others Present: Debbie Zamow, Staff Liaison and Marcella Houser, Youth <br />Representative. <br /> <br />3) Introduction of New Members <br />The Commission welcomed two new members. Susan Oliphant will serve an <br />unexpired term running until March 31,1999 and Mary Vidas will serve an unexpired <br />term running until March 31,2000. <br /> <br />4) Approval of Minutes <br />Hermes moved, Afwerke seconded that the minutes from the December 8 meeting <br />be approved. Motion passed unanimously. <br /> <br />5) Bias Complaint <br />As of the meeting date, neither complainant has returned an intake form. <br /> <br />6) Human Rights Essay Contest <br />The essays winners are listed as follows: <br /> <br />1 st Place <br />2nd Place <br />3rd Place <br />Honorable Mention <br /> <br />Charlie Socha <br />Craig Deutsch <br />Robert Fandrich <br />Pat Mitsch <br />Becca Sullivan <br /> <br />St. John the Evangelist <br />St. Rose of Lima <br />St. Rose of Lima <br />St. Rose of Lima <br />St. Rose of Lima <br /> <br />Winners and their teachers have been notified by mail that they are invited to a <br />ceremony at the City Council meeting of January 25. It was decided that due to the <br />personal nature of many of the essays, the students will not be asked to read the <br />essays at the Council meeting. <br /> <br />The League of MN Human Rights Commissions entry deadline is February 1 and the <br />winners are scheduled to be announced March 1. Because of the personal nature of <br />some of the essays, it was discussed that names and identifying characteristics may <br />need to be redacted if the essays are to be published or read on TV. Bergquist and <br />Oliphant have agreed to read the initial entries for the Statewide contest. <br />
