<br />Memo <br /> <br />To: Human Rights Commissioners <br /> <br />From: Debbie Zamow <br /> <br />Re: October 12, 1999 Meeting Summary <br /> <br />Date: October 14, 1999 <br /> <br />The Tuesday, October 12, 1999 meeting of the Roseville Human Rights Commission was not <br />held because a quorum was not present. The following members attended: Issac Afwerke, Jill <br />Bergquist, Brenda Boily-Salmanpour, Thelma McKenzie and Susan Oliphant. One visitor also <br />attended. <br /> <br />Commission members discussed the following: <br /> <br />1. Meeting Minutes of August 10, 1999 and September 14, 1999 <br />Bergquist asked that the meeting minutes of September 14, 1999, Bias Complaint section be <br />amended to say that Susan Oliphant contacted the claimant numerous times before receiving <br />a response. Because the claim was not filed within the Roseville Commission's deadline of <br />seven months, Oliphant assisted the claimant by forwarding her claim to the State <br />Department of Human Rights within the one-year statute oflimitations. The minutes will be <br />voted on at the next meeting. <br /> <br />2. "Partners in Human Rights Education" Program <br />Bergquist asked that all Commissioners evaluate whether they are interested in participating <br />in training for this program. Trained individuals will eventually be partnered with a teacher <br />and will need to be available during the day. <br /> <br />3. Other Business/Announcements <br />For the benefit of the visitor, the Commission gave a brief overview of what the Human <br />Rights Commission does. <br /> <br />Upcoming conferences include the Understanding Somali Culture and Islamic Values <br />Conference scheduled for October 22 and the Human Rights Day Conference on December <br />3, sponsored by the Minnesota State Department of Human Rights. <br /> <br />The City of Rose vi lie has scheduled this years Ethics Workshop for November 16. <br /> <br />Bergquist and McKenzie asked that Commissioners decide if they would like to start up a <br />Community Circles program. This program provides a forum for community and business <br />leaders to talk about human rights issues. The Commission would be involved with setting <br />up the dates and locations and the League would provide the facilitators. <br /> <br />Minutes from the August 10 and September 14 meeting will be voted on during the next meeting <br />scheduled for Tuesday, November 9, at 7:00 p.m. <br />
