<br />HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES <br />TUESDAY, MAY 9 <br /> <br />1) Call to Order <br />The meeting was called to order by Alexis Orosz at 7:08 p.m. <br /> <br />2) Roll Call <br />Members present: Issac Afwerke, Jil Bergquist, Eric Egli, Thelma McKenzie, Alexis <br />Orosz, and Steven Smith. <br /> <br />Members Absent: Brenda Boily-Salmanpour and Susan Oliphant <br /> <br />Others present: Debbie Zamow, Staff Liaison <br /> <br />3) Approval of Minutes <br />Egli moved, Afwerke seconded that the minutes of the February 8 meeting be <br />approved. Motion passed unanimously. <br /> <br />Egli moved, McKenzie seconded that the minutes of the April 11 meeting be <br />approved. Motion passed unanimously. <br /> <br />4) Bias Complaint/Leafletting <br />Egli reported the history of the Dawit case. He contacted Jerry Ruettimann from the <br />police department and was told that a letter was sent in February regarding setting <br />up a neighborhood watch program in the Centennial neighborhood. None of the <br />residents have responded. McKenzie suggested a final letter to the family to wrap <br />up the file. Egli moved, McKenzie seconded that Egli will draft a letter to the family <br />to close this case. <br /> <br />5) Community Outreach <br />The Community Achievement Award notice needs to be republished. Zamow will <br />provide the background. <br /> <br />7) Update Bias/Hate Response <br />McKenzie will develop a form letter to send to our current network to update their <br />contact people. <br /> <br />8) New Business <br />The award presentation for the Statewide Essay Contest sponsored by the League <br />was held on Thursday, May 4, 4:00pm at the John Rose OVAL. Orosz reported that <br />it was a wonderful event. <br /> <br />Orosz announced that the 2nd Regional Idea Exchange will be May 20. <br /> <br />Afwerke will contact former Commissioner Mike Hermes to coordinate the <br />commission's entry in this year's Rose Parade that will be held on June 26. <br />
