<br />Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />TuesdaY'.J!JJUl4-2;-200l <br />'j <br />1) Call to Order L--tLJ <br />Thelma McKenzie called the meeting to order at'7:00 p.m. A quorum was present at <br />7:30 p.m. <br /> <br />2) Roll Call <br />Members Present: Jill Bergquist, Phillip Crump, Howard Wagner, Thelma McKenzie, <br />Rita Stanoch and Stephen Smith <br /> <br />Members Absent: Issac Afwerke (unexcused), Brenda Boily-Salmanpour (unexcused) <br />and Alexis Orosz (excused). <br /> <br />Others Present: Christine Butterfield and Todd Anderson <br /> <br />3) Approval of Minutes <br />Thelma McKenzie moved and Howard Wagner seconded the approval of the minutes <br />of June 12,2001. Motion passed by unanimous vote. <br /> <br />4) Community Awareness Status <br />The commission discussed that their role is under utilized in the parade. Next year <br />the commission discussed organizing a float, wearing t-shirts or distributing <br />information. <br /> <br />Staff reminded the commission that at the next meeting a youth member would join <br />the group. <br /> <br />5) League of Minnesota Human Rights State-wide Essay Contest <br />The Commission spent a majority of the evening discussing potential questions and <br />came up with a draft: <br /> <br />(Read the Bill of Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) <br /> <br />Consider an event currently in the local, state, national oar international news in <br />which human rights are being violated. <br /> <br />How does this make you feel? What does the Universal Declaration of Human <br />Rights have to say about this situation? In what ways can you effect a change? <br /> <br />6) Adjournment <br />McKenzie moved and Howard seconded that the meeting be adjourned at 8:50 p.m. <br />Motion passed unanimously. <br />
