Providing Leadership on Human Rights Issues - Mark Chapin provided census data information.
He noted that Roseville is more diverse than most people think. The data gives us a better
understanding of our community, but isn't a complete look. He is looking for ways to gather
more information about City businesses and housing. What kinds of jobs are in the City and do
they encourage a diverse work place? Is affordable housing available? Do housing practices
encourage diversity? Mark will contact Roseville's Economic Development Specialist Cathy
Bennett to see if she has additional information.

Thelma asked how and where do Commissioners hear what the issues are. She is concerned that
adults' experiences are different from youths' experiences so Commissioners may not fully
understand what is happening in the community.

Commissioners discussed possible ways to get information from the community including a
survey.

Building New and Strengthening Existing Partnerships with Community and Businesses -
Thelma and Larry discussed their ideas to work with a business to lay the groundwork for a
partnership. Larry asked about ways to find businesses that would be good to approach. He will
contact Cathy Bennett for suggestions for businesses to approach concerning Human Rights. The
Commission must figure out what we have to offer at the same time as figuring out what
businesses need. Thelma said she wants to look for ways the Commission can partner with
businesses, look for ways they can underwrite Commission projects.

Commission Members discussed that we were back to the question of the purpose of the
Commission.

St. Paul Foundation Grant

Carolyn Curti reported that the Commission will hear about the Grant by the end of November.

New Business

Human Rights Day

Thelma McKenzie invited Commission members to attend the December 6 Human Rights Day
2002 sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights. Contact Carolyn Curti if you
are interested in attending.

Holiday Event

Steve Smith suggested that in the spirit of the season the Commission volunteer in some way as a
group. Commissioners supported the idea but suggested that we do more pre-planning and look
for ideas in winter 2003.

Meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
