Essay Contest

Thelma McKenzie reported about the essay contest presentation at the February 24 City Council
meeting. All of the students and families, both principals and most of the teachers attended the
meeting and the reception that followed. Four of the students read their essays. Thelma thanked
Larry Voeller for helping with the award presentation.

Roseville Area Schools Comprehensive Diversity Plan

All Commission members received a copy of the RAS Diversity Plan which Johanna Eager
talked about at the October 2002 meeting. Johanna requested that the Commission review and
make comments on the content.

Miscellaneous

Thelma McKenzie was recently invited to attend the Forest Lake Human Rights Commission
meeting. They are a new Commission and are looking for assistance to get started. They hope to
get students in their area to participate in the essay contest in the future.

The Commission agreed to participate in the 2003 Rose Parade on June 23. We will request a
convertible for the parade. Commissioners are encouraged to participate. Carolyn will complete
the application form and will invite the Essay contest winners to ride along. We will also
purchase candy that will be distributed along the parade route.

Thelma informed the Commission that Steve Smith and Phil Crump's terms expire March 31,
but both Commissioners reapplied to serve an additional term. The City Council is expected to
make a decision soon.

Mark Chapin requested that at the upcoming meeting, the Commission review its purpose and
objectives as a way to stay focused on the Commission's charge.

Commissioners raised the issue of proposed legislation to remove sexual orientation from being
a protected class in Minnesota. Commissioners debated whether to write a letter or contact the
Roseville legislative delegation directly. Members felt they did not have all of the facts
surrounding the proposed legislation. Mark Chapin will provide Commissioners with additional
information and propose a letter that the Commission or individual members could send.

Phil Crump moved and Karen Vnuk seconded that the meeting adjourn. Meeting adjourned at
9:10p.m.
