<br />~ <br /> <br />Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes, October 12, 2004 <br /> <br />Present: Thelma McKenzie, Chair; Janet Delmore, Steve Smith, Karen Vnuk, Larry Voeller, <br />Howard Wagner <br />Absent: Phillip Crump <br />Staff: Carolyn Curti <br /> <br />Chair Thelma McKenzie and Commissioner Janet Delmore spoke about the League of <br />Mil1l1esota Human Rights Commissions Alillual Meeting which they attended the previous <br />weekend. Reverend Grant Abbott and Hel1l1epin COl1l1ty Attorney Amy Klobuchar were the <br />keynote speakers. Both were well received outstanding speakers who praised the local human <br />rights commissions for the work we do. <br /> <br />Chair McKenzie reported on recent vandalism and a fire at a mosque and community center in <br />Fridley and Columbia Heights. The League held a press conference about the acts of <br />vandalism before the annual meeting. Local police and the FBI are investigating the crimes, <br />but call11ot comment on possible suspects or motives. <br /> <br />At 7:10 p.m. enough members arrived to reach a quorum and Chair Thelma McKenzie called <br />the meeting to order in the Roseville City Council Chambers. <br /> <br />Approve Minutes <br /> <br />Commissioner Karen Vnuk moved and Commissioner Howard Wagner seconded approval of <br />the August minutes and to accept the notes from the September meeting. Motion passed. <br /> <br />Appoint Human Rights Commission Chair <br /> <br />Commissioners discussed the responsibilities of serving as the chair, working with staff to set <br />agendas, chairing commission meetings, responding to complaints or assigning other <br />Commissioners to respond, and other responsibilities, as needs arise. Chair McKenzie agreed <br />to continue to serve as the chair for one more year, but said she would ask other <br />Commissioners to take more responsibilities. Chair McKenzie said she would like to see <br />more outreach and cOl1l1ecting with neighboring communities and the schools. <br /> <br />1 <br />
